Teenage Vampire Sex Sells?

A sexy new ad campaign for The CW’s upcoming series The Vampire Diaries, which is based on the books by L.J. Smith, is eliciting some comparisons to last fall’s racy “OMFG” spots for Gossip Girl over at The Wrap. We think they deserve kudos for originality (unlike some people), but it should be noted that the target audience for this show (which will be paired with Supernatural instead of Smallville) is likely too young for the implied ménage à trois on the poster after the jump.

Or maybe we’re just turning into old fuddy-duddies.

The Vampire Diaries tells the story of Elena Gilbert, an orphaned high school student who falls in love with a vampire. The video promo below makes this look a lot more like Twilight than True Blood — leading (high school) man, Stefan Salvatore seems like one of those sensitive, emo vampires. When he says, “I have to know her,” he doesn’t mean in the biblical sense… at least, we don’t think he does. (His Rob Lowe-lookalike brother, Damon, looks like a whole other story.)

The show debuts September 10th.
