Pedro Almodóvar is branching out. Last year, he brought us the fascinating but uneven psychological thriller The Skin I Live In. And while his next film will be I’m So Excited, a comedy that appears to harken back to his earliest work, he’s not done experimenting. Variety reports that the Spanish filmmaker told a crowd at BAFTA in London that he’s been mulling a sci-fi project inspired by 1950s classics such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers. “I am still young enough to make a science fiction movie. I have ideas for this genre,” Almodóvar said. “The way I would like to do it is present something impossible in a real, domestic way. One of the scripts on my desk is of that genre, so I hope to make that.” Despite our suspicion that Almodóvar is best at dark comedy and domestic drama, we can’t wait to see what kind of deliciously gender-fucked future he’ll come up with. And we hope it will star Penélope Cruz.
