Dallas Buyers Club is a forthcoming film based on the life of Ron Woodroof, who “began smuggling alternative drugs into the U.S. to help himself and other AIDS patients” after he was diagnosed with the illness and given six months to live. Although Matthew McConnaughey plays Woodroof, it’s his co-star, Jared Leto, who’s getting most of the attention surrounding the film — probably because his character is a cross-dresser, and gossip sites are jumping on photos from the set of Leto in drag.
For those of us who don’t find a well-known actor in a dress particularly shocking, today brings some much more fascinating news about Dallas Buyers Club. Bradford Cox, of Deerhunter and Atlas Sound fame, has been cast as the lover of Leto’s AIDS-afflicted character. Cox might be the last indie rocker we’d peg as having big-screen aspirations, but we have no doubt that his iconoclastic and unusual presence will add something exciting to the film — and it’s not like he’s a stranger to cross-dressing, either.
