From South Park to YouTube, redheads — aka “gingers” — have been the butt of many a mean joke. The prevalence of this hair- and skin tone-based prejudice inspired South African photographer Anthea Pokroy, a proud self-proclaimed ginger, to photograph over 500 red-haired people and examine the theme of a “ginger utopia” for a series called I Collect Gingers. Only seven portraits into the project, Pokroy sensed a strong feeling of community among the diverse individuals she documented. Click through to see a small sampling of her simple yet stunning collection of work, which we first encountered via Faith is Torment, and visit the project’s website to see more.
