Pic of the Day: Abandoned Asylums

For the past six years photographer/architect Christopher Payne has been documenting decaying mental institutions in the United States for his upcoming book Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals . Most of them are just sitting empty. As he explains, due to “their monumental size, heavy construction, and distinctive (but not easily altered floor plan) — have made them difficult to repurpose.” More beautifully haunting images in a photo essay over at The Book Bench.
