Samantha Hahn’s eye for beauty has helped her find illustration work for huge fashion magazines and brands like Marc Jacobs, Tiffany’s, and Mac. Looking through the exquisite watercolor portraits in her book Well-Read Women: Portraits of Fiction’s Most Beloved Heroines (Chronicle Books), it is obvious that Hahn is an aesthete who sees everything from beautiful dresses to Molly Bloom from James Joyce’s Ulysses through the same colorful lenses.

Emma Bovary from Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary.

Nora Charles from Dashiell Hammett’s The Thin Man.

Holly Golightly from Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Lorelei Lee from Anita Loos’s Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Jane Eyre from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre.
