Beautiful Photographs of Mummified Birds

These photographs, by Nick Brandt, have been circulating the last few days. They’re from his new book, Across the Ravaged Land, and usually billed as “petrified birds.” As some geeks on the Internet point out, perhaps “petrified” isn’t the right word here. These animals are something more like mummified, and their poisoning is a longish process, and in fact there are animals that can make contact with the lake and survive. (Apparently flamingos breed there.) So all that stuff you read about how this was a lake that “petrifies” “any animal that touches” it — well, that’s just hype. The photographs themselves are nonetheless beautiful, check them out:
