Terrifying Images of Monkey Street Performers

Share:

There’s something inherently depressing about the notion of enslaved monkeys forced to perform on the street, but Finnish photographer Perttu Saksa takes the unfortunate subjects of his series, A Kind of You (spotted via Feature Shoot), to a more haunting place. Each portrait shows one of the monkeys attached to a chain that leads seemingly nowhere, its face obscured by a creepy, dead-eyed doll mask. “Modern city culture has turned the old tradition in to eerie and haunting act of cruel street theatre where animals become something else, never able to reach our expectations,” Saksa explains. That spooky subtext comes across perfectly in these bleak, upsetting images.
