Sweaty, Scream-Filled Photos of Weightlifters Remind Us Why We’re Not Weightlifters

The preponderance of mirrors at gyms makes both all the sense in the world and absolutely none. The ability to concentrate exactly on your body and what part of it you’re attempting to work out is admittedly essential — or, at least, very useful. Having to look at oneself making faces that would in other circumstances express absolute pain seems less important and altogether unnecessary. Philip Haynes explores that dynamic tension in his series The Crossfitters (spotted via It’s Nice That). Haynes says his work looks “to capture the energy of saturation in colour, just as much as the energy within the movement.” There’s definitely no doubt about that in these images that suggest that maybe we aren’t working out quite hard enough. Resolution, anyone?
