Incredible Photorealistic Portraits Made Only of Nails and Thread

New York-based artist Kumi Yamashita’s Constellation series looks relatively unremarkable at first glance. A collection of portraits, the works could pass for photographs if it weren’t for their pointillistic finish. Closer examination, however, reveals that Yamashita depicts her subjects not with a camera or even a paintbrush, but a namesake “constellation” of nails, woven together with a single thread against a wood-panel backdrop. The effect is a mind-numbingly complex combination of thread and negative space, creating a convincing likeness from the bare minimum of raw materials.
