The description “American Muslim” probably conjures some specific imagery in the minds of most Americans. But Claire Beckett sets out to bring a different layer of meaning to those two words with her portrait series The Converts (spotted via The Huffington Post). In each photograph, Beckett depicts an American-born individual who has converted to Islam. “In a society that, however falsely, often constructs ‘American’ and ‘Muslim’ as diametrical opposites,” she writes, “what is the experience of people who traversed this imagined line?”
