Flavorwire Song Premiere: Kan Wakan — “Space Owl”

There’s a fascinating backstory to LA band Kan Wakan — they were founded as a “small orchestral ensemble” by Bulgarian ex-pat Gueorgui I. Linev, and their name comes from the Tagalog word for “outer space.” The name is definitely appropriate — their music mixes widescreen atmospheric instrumentalism with a reflective, late-night elegance that recalls ’90s bands like Morcheeba and Hooverphonic. We’re delighted to premiere “Space Owl,” the lead track from their debut album Moving On, which is out on June 3 through Verve Music. (If you’re in NYC, they’re supporting the release with a show at Mercury Lounge on June 5.) Click through to turn on, tune in and space out.
