Hilarious GIFs Bring Holy Renaissance Art Down to Dirty, Dirty Earth

Share:

Are you one of those people who skips the Renaissance art section at museums? Perhaps you find it hard to relate to Catholicism or beautiful naked men or baskets of fruit – or simply the distant past. As many GIF-makers are wont to do, collage artist James Kerr (AKA Scorpion Dagger) implodes time, superimposing trash culture-obsessed contemporaneity onto these exemplars of antique elegance – collaged mostly from “early and Northern Renaissance paintings” – and thereby rendering them hideously relatable and hilariously sacrilegious. While he besmirches the holy or elevated themes of Renaissance art, the fucked-with figures in his GIFs maintain their general visual appeal, and even beauty – that beauty just happens to be mooning us, or is now placed atop a toilet. And while literal shit happened to people during the Renaissance just as it happens to people now, there’s something about a pooping priest that really screams 2014 (though the fact that he’s reading a newspaper in Kerr’s GIF, rather than scrolling through a dating app, sets it back a few years — NYT stands for New York Tinder, right?).
