Video Premiere: Laura Jean, “First Love Song”

Australian singer/songwriter Laura Jean has long been known in her homeland for songs that are both cerebral and emotive, touching both the mind and the heartstrings, and her upcoming self-titled album promises to bring her charms to the rest of the world. “First Love Song” is the first single from the album, a quiet, reflective ballad that captures the sort of wary circling and clumsiness that often characterizes the start of a new relationship. As with the rest of the songs on the record, it features Flavorwire favorite Jenny Hval on backing vocals, and was recorded with PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish.

The song’s video is in keeping with the understated mood, conveying a sense of quiet intimacy as it records the lives of a series of women in London. It was directed by actor and filmmaker Alice Englert, who starred in last year’s Ginger & Rosa and is Jean’s cousin (and also happens to be Jane Campion’s daughter). We’re delighted to premiere the video.
