The Otherworldly, Neon Landscape of Nevada Casinos

The flashy casinos of Las Vegas and other gambling haunts are a mind-bending experience. Between the artificial lights and constant aural stimulation, it’s easy to feel disconnected from reality and lose all sense of time. Of course, that’s what casino owners are hoping for so that you keep spending your money.

Artist Joe Johnson, whose work we first spotted on Photojojo, has captured this surreal feeling in his photo series of Reno, Nevada casinos without their overindulgent tourists. The heady setting resembles something out of a sci-fi movie. The casino’s mirrored surfaces and neon lights are disorienting, but it’s the juxtaposition of those images with Johnson’s exterior shots that really captures a sense of otherness. Desert landscapes become the rocky vistas of strange planets. Venture to the weird world of Reno’s casinos in our gallery.
