As promised back in May, Janet Jackson has given us some new music. “No Sleeep” follows in the usual Janet vein of smooth pop, overlaid with whispery vocals — and is taken from her upcoming album, which is still untitled. The song comes before Jackson embarks on her Unbreakable World Tour this fall. So far, the “world” tour includes just Canada and the U.S., so unless she is showing a flagrant disregard for the conventions of Earth geography, we suspect some non-North American dates are on the horizon.
The extra ‘e’ in the ‘sleeep’ of the song title is likely to confound spelling purists and song notators the world over, given that its pronunciation in the song seems to follow the double-e standard. Does it exist to emphasize how hard Janet will be staying awake? Is it a pure marketing tactic to make it more searchable on Google? Alas, this may remain one of the decade’s biggest mysteries.
