There were 62 Goosebumps books in the original series — far too daunting a number to fit into the typical film-per-book format. The solution of the upcoming adaptation, rather, was to use a meta premise to seemingly cram every monster from every book into one film: Jack Black plays author R. L. Stine, whose books happen to be so magical that they contain the actual monsters they depict.
As the just-released trailer reveals, Dylan Minnette plays a dangerously curious, new-to-the-neighborhood teenager who appears to be interested in Stine’s daughter, played by The Giver’s Odeya Rush. He opens one of the Pandora’s Boxes of middling, nostalgic children’s literature, accidentally causing a chain reaction that leads all of the crawly/gnomy/snowy/etc.-y things to spill out and wreak havoc on their generic suburb and lead Jack Black to flail around in a shopping cart.
