David Letterman Leaves Retirement to Enlighten Us About “That Thing” on Donald Trump’s Head

“I know you’re saying to yourself, ‘Why is he here?'” said a bearded David Letterman, making a surprise appearance at a Steve Martin and Martin Short show in San Antonio last Friday. He didn’t keep the audience in suspense for too long, “I have retired…and I have no regrets,” he said. “Then a couple of days ago Donald Trump said he was running for president. I have made the biggest mistake of my life, ladies and gentlemen.”

Letterman then launched into one of his trademark Top Ten lists, concerning little known facts about Trump. “That thing on his head was the gopher in Caddyshack,” he said, one of three in the list — written by Letterman and Steve Martin — that contained references to “that thing on his head.”

The appearance comes just two months after the Late Show finale, and the specter of Trump running for president it seems has too much comedic value to resist. (Jon Stewart called it his “gift from heaven” on The Daily Show last month.) This latest roast isn’t the first time Letterman has taken aim at Trump, brilliantly calling out the hypocrisy of Trump’s views on the Chinese economy when he appeared on his show back in 2012.
