Movie comedians seem to have a real soft spot for Christmas movies—not because of any particular holiday spirit, it seems, but because if you end up with a perennial, it’s the gift that keeps on giving, year after year. Will Ferrell had Elf, Chevy Chase had Christmas Vacation, Bill Murray had Scrooged, and Vince Vaughn had both Fred Claus and Four Christmases. Frankly, it’s a little surprising it took Seth Rogen this long to get in on the act, but this year he’s starring in the Christmas Eve comedy The Night Before—and thankfully, it looks more Scrooged than Fred Claus.
Even better, The Night Before reteams Rogen with his 50/50 co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt and that film’s director Jonathan Levine. But where 50/50 was somewhat atypical for the star—playing a supporting role in a cancer story that, while funny, had unsurprisingly dramatic beats—this a full-on Rogen bad-boy comedy, with a script by his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg, director Levine, and producers-turned-screenwriters Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir.
With a supporting cast that includes Anthony Mackie, Mindy Kaling, Lizzy Caplan, 22 Jump Street scene-stealer Jillian Bell, and (according to IMDb) cameos for Miley Cyrus and Kanye West (whose songs appear in the trailer), The Night Before could be just the R-rated zonked-out high-as-fuck Christmas movie we never knew we wanted. Here’s the first, red-band trailer:
The Night Before hits theaters November 25th.
