Though Prince was among one of the musicians to join the Mount Olympian club of exclusive Tidal support, pulling his music from all other streaming services and leading to speculation over whether he’d become a Tidal co-owner, he’s just released a new track on Spotify. Gasp!Apart from this little streaming-politics surprise, the song (called “Stare”) is, itself gasp-worthily good.
It’s the second track released from Prince’s recently announced upcoming LP, The Hit & Run Album, made with his band, 3rdEyeGirl. The band said of the album upon the announcement:
This album is absolutely for them, because it’s super funky. It’s weird, there’s a lot of experimental sound. It’s just hit after hit and definitely caters to those fans who just love to hear what Prince has to say, rather than wanting to always hear that classic Purple Rain Prince sound.
That being said, this particular song features a sly throwback to “Purple Rain,” with the same fluttering guitar surrounding a pause after the word “kiss” as it does before the word in the song “Purple Rain.”
