It’s been almost 16 years since we’ve had a new album from OG rapper, former Death Row Records co-owner, and West Coast G-funk pioneer Dr. Dre. The famed N.W.A member has announced the arrival of Compton, a new album inspired by the upcoming biopic about the hip hop group (named after their 1988 debut, Straight Outta Compton). Dre’s musical accompaniment to the movie drops exclusively on iTunes on August 7, while the film hits theaters on August 14. Guest vocalists on Compton include Eminem, Kendrick Lamar (whose video for “For Free?” came out this week), and more. Dre’s 1999 album 2001 was the last work we’ve heard from the artist. Kanye West praised 2001, stating: “’Xxplosive’, off 2001, that’s [where] I got my entire sound from — if you listen to the track, it’s got a soul beat, but it’s done with those heavy Dre drums. Listen to ‘This Can’t Be Life,’ a track I did for Jay-Z’s Dynasty album, and then listen to ‘Xxplosive’. It’s a direct bite.” Here’s the full track list from Compton (hat tip to Spin).
