It turns out Angelina Jolie Pitt’s new movie is worth anticipating for far more than the headline-worthy fact that it’s the first time she and Pitt have shared the screen since the Brangelina-maker, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. By the Sea, which Jolie Pitt wrote and directed, has a new trailer, and at least from this first, 1:15 minute glance, it looks riveting, tense and beautiful. (Also, it comes with the added intrigue of not just starring Brangelina, but being an instance of a remaining Hollywood super-couple psychologically eviscerating one another onscreen.)
According to Entertainment Weekly, the film was actually shot last year on the couple’s honeymoon on Gozo — a remote island near Malta on which they built the hotel and bar seen in the trailer as part of the set. In By the Sea, they play Vanessa and Roland, a couple whose marriage is deteriorating, who’ve come to a European seaside town to try to repair it. From what’s revealed in the trailer, that doesn’t look to be an easy task.
Back when they began filming, Jolie Pitt told People:
We are working together on a drama about grief and finding a way through a difficult marriage… We find it very funny that it’s our honeymoon.
