Spike Lee Is Finally Getting an (Honorary) Oscar

…Along with Gena Rowlands and Debbie Reynolds, The New York Times reports. Of course, the honorary awards won’t be presented during the live broadcast in early 2016, but at the Motion Picture Academy’s Governor Awards this November. After just two nominations and no wins in Lee’s three-decade career, though, we’ll take what we can get.

Gena Rowlands, meanwhile, receives her honorary award after just one nomination over the course of her career, including her legendary collaborations with husband John Cassavetes. Finally, Reynolds will earn the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her philanthropic work on mental health issues.

The Academy’s announcement may be too little, too late after collectively snubbing Do the Right Thing in favor of—sigh—Driving Miss Daisy way back in 1989. Congratulations nonetheless to Lee, Rowlands, and Reynolds on the well-deserved honor. Now back to our bunkers, where we’ll remain in hibernation until Oscar hype starts up in earnest come fall.
