The trailer for Downton Abbey‘s sixth season leaves you with no doubts about it being the series’ last. The minute-long clip goes all out on closure and adds some extra sappy dollops. Figures walk away down paths, remove name tags, pack luggage and the moments with speech exhibit characters wistfully reflecting on the passage of time. “We’ve certainly had our moments, haven’t we my Lady?” says Anna Bates; “We certainly have,” confirms a stoic Lady Mary Crawley.
If all that wasn’t enough to leave fans reaching for their vintage lace handkerchiefs, the images are scored by a cover of Andrea Bocelli’s wail inducing, Time to Say Goodbye. In saying all that, there have been strong rumors of a prequel, and show creator Julian Fellowes told Variety earlier this year that the show “May be reborn as a movie or a play or a musical or a ballet. Who knows if we’ve seen the last of it?”
The UK and Ireland Season 6 premiere is on September 20th. No date has been confirmed for the US release.
