Netflix already released a long teaser trailer for Cary Joji Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation, which displayed Idris Elba’s warlord character (in an unnamed West African country) cajoling a child into slaughtering a man. That child is Agu (Abraham Attah), a boy whose family was murdered by oppositional forces, and who has now fallen into Elba’s charismatic character’s web. That trailer relied on the tension of the one scene, and a new, full trailer — released today, just after the film’s explosive Venice Film Festival premiere earlier this week — gives more of a sense of the scope of the whole film, which is based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Uzodinma Iweala.
Beasts of No Nation — which is already wowing critics, with The Guardian lauding “towering performances” by Elba and newcomer Attah and calling it “a violent and disorientating nightmare with a shiver of Coppola’s Apocalypse Now“ — will be released on Netflix and in various Landmark theaters on October 16.
