‘Nashville’s’ R.J. Cutler and DJ Steve Angello Are Bringing EDM Drama ‘The Drop’ to The CW

Former Swedish House Mafia DJ Steve Angello will team up with Nashville exec producer R.J. Cutler and Kyle Jarrow to create The Drop, a TV drama about the world of EDM, for The CW.

According to Deadline, The Drop will tell the story of a DJ in Miami who’s “teetering on the edge of ruin,” and turns his life around when he starts mentoring “a gifted protégé who is female and African-American, both rarities” in a musical sphere dominated by white men. Angello’s production title will be “executive music producer,” while ZE creator Kyle Jarrow will write and executive produce the series, and Cutler will direct and executive produce.

Last month’s Zac Efron-starring EDM coming of age flop We Are Your Friends revealed that millennials, regardless of how much they may love being pandered to, will not watch something just because it features a modern hook. That said, Angello’s pedigree offers hope for a story with some measure of authenticity or, at least, a set of artist-characters who make music we’d believe people might listen to. That said, there’s no word yet as to whether Angello will produce original music for the show.

Angello is also expected to release Wild Youth, his first full album since Swedish House Mafia’s 2013 break-up, later this year.
