A new trailer for Room teases how a young boy might experience the world after spending his entire life in captivity. An adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s 2010 novel of the same name, the film recounts the story of a woman, simply called Ma, and her five-year-old son Jack, who survive years of imprisonment in a small shed. Ma, played by Brie Larson, attempts to protect the boy by maintaining that their prison, dubbed “room,” is their entire world. Eventually, as the boy’s curiosity escalates, she plans their escape.

Based on the trailer, it seems the film will spend a fair amount of time exploring their time in captivity as well as their life after they escape.

A limited run of Room — which is directed by Frank‘s Lenny Abrahamson and also stars Joan Allen and William H. Macy — opens in New York and LA October 16.
