Yoko Ono organized a gathering in New York’s Central Park yesterday where she and other John Lennon fans attempted to form the world’s largest human peace sign. The event, held to celebrate John Lennon’s upcoming 75th birthday on October 9, doubled as a fundraiser for Ono’s music education charity, The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus.
According to CBS News, a representative for the Guinness Book of World Records was on hand to count the number of participants and confirmed that the human peace sign comprised more than 2,000 people. To break the record, the peace sign would have needed more than 5,800 participants.
Ono had said she hoped to draw between 6,000 and 10,000 people to the event shortly after she announced her plan at New York city hall last month. Though the attempt was striking in its aerial footage, it was — insomuch as world records are concerned — not a success:
