Announced this morning in part on Good Morning America and thereafter via Snapchat, Taylor Swift and her 2014 album 1989 will attempt to continue a victory run at this year’s American Music Awards ceremony with six nominations, including Artist and Song of the Year. Should she sweep this year’s ceremony, Swift will tie with the late Whitney Houston for most AMA awards for a female artist (22), and will be within Michael Jackson’s record (26).
The Weeknd, who is enjoying his ascension into the mainstream, was nominated for five awards, including Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and for some dubious reason (with one tripartite mixtape from 2011/2012 and two LPs), New Artist of the Year.
Wiz Khalifa’s sentimental collaboration with Charlie Puth “See You Again,” featured prominently at the conclusion of Furious 7 in tribute to Paul Walker, was nominated for song of the year, along with the song you heard in every commercial, movie or TV show trailer, and radio station: Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk!” featuring Bruno Mars.
The American Music Awards will air on ABC on Sunday, November 22nd and will be hosted by Jennifer Lopez.
