Today, Gwen Stefani released “Used To Love You” — the third in a series of “album-less” songs that include “Baby Don’t Lie” and “Spark the Fire.” And surrounding the release, Stefani confirmed that a new album is, indeed, officially on the way.
Stefani first premiered the song this past Saturday, during the encore of her one-night-only show at Hammerstein Ballroom; though her preface was vague, describing it as a “special song” that was written “recently,” it’s safe to assume “Used To Love You” is about her recent split with husband of thirteen years, Gavin Rossdale. The background visual projected during the live premiere — a stationary close-up of Stefani looking distraught yet resolved, staring straight into the camera — turned out to be the official video uploaded today.
The new album, which she described as “pure and honest” to Vulture, is due sometime in 2016 and will be her first since 2006’s The Sweet Escape.
