Rooney Mara and Nicholas Hoult to Co-Star in Sci-Fi Love Story

The Carol and X-Men stars have officially signed on to a new project from the creators of The One I Love, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Directed by Charlie McDowell and co-written by McDowell and Justin Lader, who occupied the same roles for last year’s sci-fi tinged romantic drama starring Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss, The Discovery is set “in a world where the existence of the afterlife is scientifically proven.”

The premise is familiar territory for Hoult, who most recently headlined Equals, another sci-fi romance co-starring Kristen Stewart. (Hoult’s also a veteran of high-budget genre franchises like X-Men and Mad Max.) The film, which recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, takes place in a dystopian society without emotions. Mara, meanwhile, is fresh off a widely acclaimed performance opposite Cate Blanchett in Todd Haynes’ Carol, coming to theaters this November.

No word on when production will start, let alone an expected release date, but Hoult and Mara fans should keep their eyes open for more news in the coming months.
