Pacino in the Park: Al Stars in The Merchant of Venice

This just in from our pals at ArtsBeat: “Al Pacino will play the title character in this summer’s coming production of The Merchant of Venice, the Public Theater said on Monday.” The classic comedy will be presented in repertory with The Winter’s Tale, but Pacino will only be performing in the former. Daniel Sullivan (who previously helmed a 1973 revival of “Merchant” at Lincoln Center) will direct.

It will be the first time Pacino has graced the New York stage in seven years, and the second time he’s playing the role Shylock in a production — he also starred in Michael Radford’s 2004 film adaptation. The trailer after the jump should give you an idea of what to expect.

Previews for Shakespeare in the Park 2010 will begin on Wednesday, June 9 and run through Sunday, August 1.
