Fox Is Developing a Latino Music Industry Drama Series Based on ‘Romeo and Juliet’

The Romeo and Juliet adaptations continue. Not long after the announcement of a R&J sequel series from Shondaland/ABC — Still Star-Crossed (which unfortunately does not take a cue from another cultural trend and follow zombie Romeo and Juliets on a revenge quest) — comes Fox’s stab at an adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragic romance.

This show will apply a modern, Latino and Los Angeles-based spin on the very recognizable narrative. With the towering success of Empire (also on Fox) and the anticipation surrounding Mick Jagger/Martin Scorsese’s Vinyl, another trend you may be seeing is music industry dramas — and this similarly falls into that category.

Deadline reports that it’ll reimagine the story against “the backdrop of Los Angeles’ new Latino wealth” in the music and radio industries. The project, which is still untitled, is being written and executive produced by Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman.
