‘Mad Max,’ ‘Ex Machina,’ and ‘Sicario’ Nominated for PGA Awards

It’s not even worth wasting the words to talk about the inanity of awards season, so we’ll just get on with it: the Producers Guild of America has released the nominations for its PGA Awards. The group nominates only 10 films per year, so it’s a nice tidy bunch of titles to talk about. And, happily, the titles aren’t entirely what you’d expect, though they are definitely deserving.

Alex Garland‘s Ex Machina (which we love) is maybe the nicest surprise of the bunch, having been released early in the year and overshadowed by all of the Oscar-fodder of late 2015. (It certainly produced the best meme of any award-winning film.)

We’re also happy to see Sicario is on the list, even though it didn’t generate any gifs of a Emily Blunt dancing. But, seriously, it was a standout performance from an often underrated actress, so it was certainly nice to see the PGA give it some love, especially because the PGA Awards are usually a fairly good indicator with how the Academy is going to dole out Oscar nominations in the next few weeks. And let’s not forget about Straight Outta Compton , one of the year’s most energizing films that deserves to be the token Oscar stand-in for all the crowd pleasers.
