It’s been a while since the fourth season of Arrested Development arrived to much fanfare and departed with a whimper over at Netflix, but news comes today via IndieWire that the show could be returning for a fifth season, and it could be very different.
Creator Mitch Hurwitz has said that the fifth season is being rewritten as a murder mystery, perhaps to capitalize on the recent success of The Jinx and Making a Murderer. We can all agree that the fourth season was a valiant effort, what with the way it experimented with form and chronology, but we can also probably all agree that it was a kind of failed effort, staining the altogether imperfect three seasons that preceded it.
If Hurwitz’s pipe dream comes true, he’ll write, film, and air this season on Netflix before the election in November, so maybe a Trump-esque figure will be key to the proceedings? Who knows. The ideal plot would involve the murder of every single member of the Bluth family so as to prevent any more subpar episodes from being added to the already lackluster series.
