‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ ‘Paul Blart’ and ‘Pixels’ Headline 2016 Razzie Nominations

There were a lot of bad movies in 2015, but only one movie gets to win an award for worst movie of the year.

The nominees for the 2016 Razzie awards were announced Wednesday on the awards’ website. The awards, an industry-adopted satire of award shows like the Oscars and Golden Globes, have become well known for getting a laugh out of actors, who occasionally turn up at the make-shift award ceremony to collect their prize in person. As is customary, the Razzie nominations have been announced the day before the Academy is expected to release its list of nominees for the best films of the year.

While the Academy Award-worthy films seem more plentiful than usual this year, the Razzie noms are focused on a few exceptional front-runners. Fifty Shades of Grey, the obvious favorite, is nominated in six of 10 categories: worst picture, worst actor, worst actress, worst “screen combo” (chemistry), worst director and worst screenplay. Adam Sandler’s Pixels (five nominations), Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 (six nominations), and the Wachowski siblings’ Jupiter Ascending (six nominations) are also prime contenders.
