Yasiin Bey (Formerly Mos Def) Freestyled His Retirement Announcement

Yasiin Bey, the artist formerly known as Mos Def, said his next album will be his last in a freestyle published Tuesday on Kanye West’s website.

The message, which might be better described as a long, winding voicemail with a deliberate meter, said Bey plans to retire from film and television, “effective immediately.” He also said his next and final album will come out later this year.

The message comes after Bey was arrested in Cape Town for using fake travel documents and illegally keeping his family in South Africa, according to TMZ. In his rap, Bey describes his situation and said he wanted to go home.

As Pitchfork points out, the freestyle references Kanye’s two recently released tracks, “No More Parties in LA” and “Real Friends.” The freestyle message opens with the line “No more parties in S.A.”

Bey is currently out of prison on bail and will stand trial in Cape Town March 8. Meanwhile, his family must leave South Africa by January 28. Listen to the message below.
