Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei recreated the 2015 photograph of the child Alan Kurdi, a deceased Syrian refugee whose body washed up on the shore of Turkey.

The photo recreation, shot on the Greek island of Lesbos, features the artist lying facedown on a rocky beach in a pose similar to how Kurdi was found.

The photo was taken by photographer Rohit Chawla for India Today, with Ai and his team contributing to the staging of the photo. It has also been shown as part of an exhibit at the India Art Fair.

Ai, a renown artist/activist, has been an outspoken supporter of refugee rights during the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis. According to The Guardian , the image is the most recent in a series of projects about refugees in Greece, one of many points of entry for Syrians entering Europe.
