Zoolander is not a cult-classic because of its smart humor. No, it’s like Anchorman, completely beloved for its very, very dumb antics, which some might label, through post-rationalization, as “intelligent” or “satire,” but no, it’s just dumb, and that’s why it’s great. A new, longer trailer just dropped for the upcoming sequel, Zoolander 2, and it looks like the second film is looking to be just as beautifully idiotic as the first.
The film’s trailer finds Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller, who also directed, co-wrote, and co-produced) once again teaming up with Hansel (Owen Wilson) to bring down Mugatu (Will Ferrell) and new, bee-stung fashion criminal named Alexanya Atoz (Kristen Wiig). There’s wigs, facial hair, A$AP Rocky, Justin Bieber, Kyle Mooney, Skrillex, and a ton of other celebrity cameos in this trailer alone, and anyone somewhat fashion-related is expected to be in the film itself. That is to say: it’s got it all.
It’s the best the film has looked since the initial announcement years back, and it certainly looks like it might not be a complete travesty. But, then again, the quality of the trailer could just be thanks to the absence of Benedict Cumberbatch’s androgynous character. Maybe they’ve cut him from the film?
Watch the trailer below. The film is set for a February 12 release.
