What if, in the future, everything was designed by a Ridley Scott-appointed aesthete, and what if that meant that we all wore white oxford shirts buttoned to the top, with white jackets and white pants? And what if, then, we weren’t allowed to have sex with one another, lest we be cast off from society? Such are the questions asked in Equals, the upcoming film starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult.
Directed by Drake Doremus and written by Nathan Parker (who co-wrote Moon), Equals is executive produced by Ridley Scott and seems to be taking the emotionless sci-fi gimmick to its extreme, throwing a wrench into the thing by introducing a virus that, somehow, allows human beings to feel emotion. This is what happens to Hoult, who falls in love with Stewart, who also has the infection but tries to hide it. Eventually they try to run away together, perhaps to a place where green clothes are allowed.
The film co-stars Guy Pearce, Jacki Weaver, and Bel Powley, who was last seen in the great Diary of a Teenage Girl. Equals premiered at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival, but does not yet have a solid U.S. release date.
