Real-life couple Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander are living in a lighthouse, chilling on the rocky seaside, heads in each other’s hands, when a ship washes ashore. They hear a baby screaming, and so must postpone their coital union. Annoyed, Alicia runs to the beach to stop the baby’s screaming, only to discover that the baby is alone aboard a boat with a dead man. So, she does what one must do: she takes the baby as her own.
This is the story of Derek Cianfrance’s (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines) new movie, The Light Between Oceans, based on M. L. Stedman’s 2012 novel of the same name. The first trailer has just been released.
Rachel Weisz stars as the wife of the dead man and the mother of the living baby, and somehow she enters the lives of these people, forcing them to decide whether or not to fess up and give her the child. Of course, after months of living with a baby and publicly claiming it as one’s own, admitting that you found the thing on a boat and forced it to live with you is kind of difficult, so the picture takes on an expectedly traumatic tone — though probably not as traumatic the whole of Blue Valentine.
The Light Between Oceans is set for a September 2 release, so hopefully Ryan Gosling can be edited in by then. Watch the trailer below.
