Ethan Hawke, Julianne Moore, and Greta Gerwig Form the Whitest Little Love Triangle in ‘Maggie’s Plan’ Trailer

Ethan Hawke, Greta Gerwig, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, The Paris Review in bed, ice skating, mustard-colored tights, and Julianne Moore with a heavy European accent? The first trailer for Maggie’s Plan has it all.

Created by writer-director-actor Rebecca Miller, Maggie’s Plan sees Hawke as John, who is unhappily married to Moore’s Georgette, a woman from an indeterminate European country, based on her amusingly harsh accent. Gerwig is Maggie, who falls in love with John only to later fall out of love with John. And so she concocts the titular plan, which is to make John fall back in love with Georgette, because human adults cannot exist in a state of non-love, apparently.

Hader and Rudolph play the film’s obligatory best friends — both to Maggie, because married people don’t have real relationships outside of the marriage, as we all know from films and sitcoms.

The trailer features a lot of books and academia (Maggie works at the New School, so) and also lots of plainly OK music, painting the film as a purely enjoyable, insubstantial thing that is perfect for the springtime and early summer. So, it makes sense then that it’s due out for a limited release on May 20.

As much as it sounds like we aren’t excited for this film, trust us, we are. Cinematic junk food always has its place. Watch the trailer below.
