Rate-a-Trailer: Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood

Simply put, Ridley Scott‘s new version of Robin Hood is meant for the Braveheart crowd. If you were a fan of Kevin Reynold’s glossy take on the popular English myth back in the ’90s, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, then this decidedly R-rated update might not be your thing. If you loved Gladiator and Black Hawk Down’s quick-cut violence and hyper-realism, it should be right up your alley.

In Scott’s re-telling, we follow young Robin Hood (played by his pet actor Russell Crowe) from the Siege of Chalus Chabrol and King Richard’s subsequent death to his turn as the mythologized outlaw stealing back the coinage paid to English barons. Cate Blanchett stars as Maid Marian, Mark Strong (who plays the villain in Sherlock Holmes) plays Sir Godfrey, and Matthew Macfayden is the Sheriff of Nottingham.

The film is being marketed as historically accurate, and we can’t tell if this is the case in the trailer, but it can certainly replace your morning coffee. What we do know is that the sets look absolutely fantastic — like something out of the Lord of the Rings movies.

So what do you think? Is this another Gladiator or does it look more like a Kingdom of Heaven?

Robin Hood is due out in theaters on May 14, 2010.
