Queen of the Desert, the Werner Herzog-directed biopic about British explorer Gertrude Bell, may finally be gearing up for its worldwide big-screen release. As Indiewire notes, the film has only played at a few select film festivals, including the Berlin Film Festival, where it debuted.
Starring Nicole Kidman as Gertrude Bell — a British explorer, adventurer, archaeologist, and huge role-player in 1920s Middle Eastern politics — Queen of the Desert tells the story of a “curious and adventurous young woman eager to explore the world outside England.”
So far, reviews have cast Queen of the Desert in a pretty unfavorable light, with Indiewire referring to it as Herzog’s “worst movie in years” and THR calling it “a passionless trudge that lacks both sweep and psychological complexity.” But, with a cast that includes James Franco, Robert Pattinson, and Damian Lewis on a roster that’s already spearheaded by Academy Award-winner Nicole Kidman, it may still draw audience attention.
Queen of the Desert does not have an official U.S. release date yet but, in the meantime, you can watch the new trailer below:
