Hulu is working on the pilot for a new supernatural drama called Citizen and the legendary singer/songwriter/composer/actor Tom Waits has been tapped to star. This role will follow Waits’ recent stint as Zachariah in the 2012 movie Seven Psychopaths, as well as a guest voice appearance on The Simpsons.
The new Hulu series will be directed by Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and will be set in a “supernaturalized” version of Los Angeles. Described as a “hero origin story,” Citizen promises to blend “gritty vigilantism with elements of magical realism.”
Tom Waits has joined the cast in the role of a priest named Cesar. According to Deadline, Cesar is a proud anti-authoritarian who has been (questionably) using his Boyle Heights church to run a guerilla humanitarian outfit. His character will challenge the notion of virtue and vice.
Executive production for the new Hulu series will be handled by the show’s director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, along with Nicholas Shutt, Josh Pate, and Anonymous Content’s David Kanter, Matt DeRoss, and Steve Golin.
