Full Frontal with Samantha Bee is maybe the most successfully launched late-night show in quite some time, what with a nearly constant stream of viral videos being generated by the show week after week since its early February debut. By achieving this success Samantha Bee has (hopefully) quieted the once-inevitable question of whether or not a woman could headline a mainstream, culturally relevant late-night show. She’s also continued to prove that The Daily Show, as helmed by Jon Stewart, was maybe one of the most bountiful talent farms in TV history.
This weekend, Katie Couric sat down for an interview with Bee over fries, a burger, and chicken paillard at one of the many P.J. Clarke’s in the city. Throughout the interview, Bee jokes about having a childhood crush on Jesus, stealing cars with her bad-boy boyfriend, and having a Wiccan for a mom. Couric also asked Bee about how she feels about having not been asked to take over for Stewart when he left, and Bee simply said, “I’m very zen about it.” Her calmness can probably be attributed to the fact that, at around the same time, her husband, Jason Jones, had a show picked up at TBS (The Detour). It was shortly after that the network extended its offer of Full Frontal to Bee.
