Director Antoine Fuqua is best known for his gritty work behind the lens of films like Training Day and Olympus Has Fallen, though he has strayed from his guns and bombs formula before (King Arthur). Still, given his taste for guns, it’s not a huge departure that he’s directed the upcoming The Magnificent Seven, a remake of the 1960s western classic, which was, of course, an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 Seven Samurai. The first trailer for the film has just dropped, and it packs a whole lot of star power and gun powder. And maybe even some bombs, I guess.
It seems prudent to break down the cast of this thing, because it’s pretty impressive. The gang of saviors is headed up by Denzel Washington, who then recruits Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-hun Lee, Ethan Hawke, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Martin Sensmeie. Peter Sarsgaard plays the evil industrialist who rules over the town that the titular seven are trying to save, and it might just be the role he was born to play.
The trailer showcases what looks to be a surprisingly stylish shoot ’em up, and finds Denzel in prime badass mode while Pratt goofs around, though not in as cheeseball a way as you’d expect from his roles in Jurassic Park or Guardians of the Galaxy or Parks & Recreation. D’Onofrio is sporting a very impressive beard, and Ethan Hawke looks appropriately hawkish. It’s one of the best trailers we’ve seen this year, and it’s only a teaser!
