Maria Bamford has been working the stand-up circuit for years and years, and she’s carved out space as a beloved weirdo there, performing at times alongside the likes of Zach Galifianakis and Patton Oswalt in The Comedians of Comedy. She’s also built a substantial career as a voiceover actress, with good reason: her malleable pipes are a signature of her comedy style. What she’s yet been able to do is forge a solid path into live action television, but with the help of Netflix, Mitch Hurtwitz (Arrested Development), and Pam Brady (South Park), it seems that’s going to change with a great-looking show called Lady Dynamite.
The first trailer for Lady Dynamite just dropped today, and it’s a real doozy. It paints the show as a semi-autobiographical look at the life of an actress and comedian who has battled with mental illness, as Bamford has. (Which was briefly touched on here.) Dynamite looks about as zany as one could hope from the creator of Arrested Development, but also appeals to a kind of pathos often missing from that show. It also touts an absurdly impressive cast of co-stars, including Ana Gasteyer, Bridget Everett, Fred Melamed, Andrew Daly, and Lennon Parham.
Watch the trailer below. The show premieres on Netflix on May 20.
