The sad news of Prince’s passing on April 21 has been, in a way, overshadowed on the internet by the tremendous hype surrounding Beyoncé’s Lemonade. Luckily, those outside of the internet haven’t forgotten this momentous passing, and some of them — including Jimmy Fallon and D’Angelo — have prioritized creating worthy tributes to the man.
Last night on The Tonight Show, D’Angelo performed alongside Princess, a Prince cover band that includes SNL-alum Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum. They covered Prince’s 1986 song “Sometimes It Snows in April,” with Princess provided backing vocals and harmonies, and, though the entire performance was moving, and powerful, it was very nice to see Rudolph allowed to sing in a serious setting. She’s got some real pipes.
