Last year, the world was subjected to yet another cinematic take on Macbeth. This one starred Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard alongside each other. Luckily, the Justin Kurzel-directed film was worth its space in the collection — Flavorwire really liked it.
But, as talented of a director as Kurzel is, it can not be argued that a large part of Macbeth’s appeal was owed directly to the brilliant performances put forth by Fassbender and Cotillard, who played Macbeth and Lady Macbeth respectively. So, it should not be all too surprising that, for his next film directing venture, Kurzel has decided to bring both actors back together — and hopefully it’ll recapture some of Macbeth’s dark magic.
Yesterday on Jimmy Kimmel Live, audiences got their first preview of the trio’s next offering when the first trailer for Assassin’s Creed premiered. The film, which is being distributed through 20th Century Fox, is based off the extremely popular video game from which it takes its name. It will follow Callum Lynch, the present-day descendant of a 15th century Spanish assassin named Aguilar de Nerha, both played by Fassbender.
For better or for worse, the film is also being produced by the original video game’s developers Ubisoft, and their involvement announces itself in the trailer, which features a set that looks like it could have been plucked straight from the digital game world. In other news, the trailer uses “I Am a God” by Kanye West, and that’s pretty great, considering.
Assassin’s Creed will hit theaters on December 21st. Watch the trailer below.
